Concussion is a common and relatively minor traumatic brain injury. But left undiagnosed, more serious problems can arise. Auldric Ratajczak, Nuffield Health Deputy Medical Director, Wellbeing, takes to the rugby pitch to look at the warning signs.
This film was conceptualised around the controversy of concussion in contact sports during 2015. Being an industry leader in healthcare, Nuffield Health decided it would be a good advertisement of their expertise to weigh in on the matter.
This project was extremely difficult to shoot as it required a lot of fast pace action, coupled with a variety of shot types. Filming in extreme low light also added to the complexity.
To increase the dramatic effect, I used a lot of slow-motion juxtaposed with high shutter speed, tracking shots. To achieve this, I opted to use the RED Epic, and to improve low light performance, the new Dragon sensor. As we had to move quickly, I used some smaller Canon L Series zoom lenses to avoid too many changes. This decision proved to be vital as poor weather conditions made setup times a real issue.
Although the Dragon sensor certainly performed better than its older MX counterpart, there was still noticeable grain in a number of shots. The Neat Video plugin for Adobe Premiere was an essential part of post-production as, at the cost of some sharpness, I could clean up most of the mess.
